So my last post about my TomTom VIA 1535 was about set up and installation so this post I’m going to tell you all about some of the great features that I have used while running around town and doing errands. Please forgive me if I skip around a bit, there is so much I want to write and tell you all about!

First of all let me tell you about the phone sync feature. As I said in my last post it was really easy to pair up my phone with my VIA. What’s cool about this feature is that it automatically downloads your phone book for you. It also has a setting where it stores your home phone number and you can use voice recognition to call! I tried this out and although it was super simple when calling home (Just say “Call Home”)it was bit more of a challenge trying to get a number out of my phone book. I had to keep saying “Next Page” until I finally got to the T’s and then had to say which number that I wanted to call. Not something I would feel comfortable with while driving so I think I will just stick to not making phone calls with the voice recognition. You can set up the GPS to answer calls automatically or with a certain amount of rings or not at all. I do love that setting! The speaker has good sound quality and both me and my hunny could hear each other crystal clear!

I’ve got to tell you that I was super impressed with my TomTom VIA just driving around town. I used it to get to the Kia dealership since I needed a oil change before our big road trip. I ALWAYS get lost going there. I once again tried the voice recognition saying the command and then saying the address. It took a couple of times (3 I believe) to finally get the address correct. You can also type in the address if your impatient (like I usually am but really wanted to test out the voice recognition). But happy to say that I made it there and I didn’t get lost!! Woop Woop! I also tried out the “Take me to the nearest Starbucks” voice command and it found one for me.

Some of the “extras” that I experienced while driving:

Shows the speed limit of the road you are on. I always seem to miss the speed limit signs and am always asking what’s the speed limit so this feature is one of my favorites. It also shows how fast you are driving and will show up red if you are going to fast. (Yes I found that out on my own.)

Another feature that I appreciate is that it tells you what lane to be in while driving on the freeway!  I don’t know how many times I have been in a wrong lane and missed my exit and Washington freeways are so intertwined that I always end up on the wrong one so this will cut my driving time down a lot! Haha!

Change your route. When I first started out it wanted to take me down a long busy main road with so many lights on it that I can’t stand to use the road anymore. So I simply clicked on “change route” and it came up with a different option on how to get there. I clicked again on the new route and presto chango I was on my way!

I could not be happier with my TomTom VIA and I cannot wait to use it on our road trip and tell you guys all about even MORE of the features it has to offer! Wish me luck on our trip and although I will be trying to keep up with blogging it may be a week or two before you hear from me again. Wyoming or Bust!! It amazes me how I can search for the perfect present for my kids and they almost always have more fun with the box that it came in. I think that’s why I am impressed with the Build A Dream Playhouses company. They have taken that basic idea of a child’s imagination with a cardboard box and vamped it up. Genius, and I’m actually a little jealous that I didn’t come up with the idea. Haha!

When it arrived I immediately took everything out and then handed the box to the girls to play with while I built their Dream Machine. My only problem with assembly was that I should have waited till the girls were napping, otherwise putting it together was so simple. No tools needed and instructions were easy to follow.

Within 10 or so minutes and lots of “Can you guys please not do that till I’m finished” I was done! The little ones LOVED it and pushed, crawled in and out, waved bye, put every stuffed animal they owned in it, they even put their little pink chairs in it so they could sit while driving. It kept them busy for hours and pretty soon I was seeing other family members joining in the fun. Dad crawled in for awhile (6ft man in the Dream Machine was HILARIOUS), the cats enjoyed it, and even got my elusive 12 year old son in there playing!

I like the fact that we can decorate our Dream Machine any way we want. Whether using paint, markers, or color crayons your little one is free to express their inner Picasso. I let the girls color it up with crayons because I wasn’t brave enough to give them paint brushes. But we also broke out our foam and regular stickers and they had a blast sticking them EVERYWHERE! I’m thinking rhinestones would be a great addition to it too! I also love the fact that Build A Dream Playhouses are made in the USA and are 100% recyclable!

I have to admit that I have no sense of direction. I believe it was inherited from my Grandma who got lost every time we went to the movies, and yes it was always the same theater, along with many other places we tried to get to. I have always looked up directions online, printed them out, then tried to read them as I drove down the road. That is until I received my TomTom Via 1535 GPS unit!!! All I have to say is THANK YOU TOMTOM!! (said in the Oprah everyone is getting a car voice) There is so much to tell you about this awesome GPS unit that I’m gonna have to break it down in a series of posts. So without further ado….

Set Up:

The box comes complete with everything that you need. Car charger, USB Cord (for computer hook up), directions, Round Circle for car installation, handy dandy card for voice recognition phrases, Life Time Maps directions, and of course the GPS Unit itself.

The first thing that I did (since the little ones were awake and I wasn’t brave enough to drag them out to the car to try to install it) was to sign up with the TomTom website so I could update the maps. Signing up was quick and painless and after plugging in the unit to my computer it was happily updating maps for me and charging the unit all at once! Downloading the upgrades takes some time (mine was 30mins) but since I had to wait to go play with it in the car that wasn’t a problem for me.

Once that was done I began to read the instructions manual that were included in the box. It had all the key points on how to work it and different ways to do things but I had to look up more thorough directions on the website to get more details for some of the features like syncing up your cell phone. Again, super easy and directions were easy to understand and now I can talk on my cell through my VIA! LOVE that feature. You can choose different voices for your unit and even pick different cars for your display. Just to let you know I picked a pink car! So that was it for the setup. Simple, fast, and right up my alley!

Installation:

The hardest part of installing the TomTom VIA 1535 GPS unit in my car was washing the inside of the windsield. Haha! Simply peel off the backing on the circle and place on your windshield. ! I placed mine under my rear view mirror right above the dashboard. I have a OCD needs to be centered, everything in it’s place kind of thing going on, but I’m sure you can place it anywhere on the windshield as long as it’s not obstructing your view of the road.

I placed the VIA 1535 unit on the circle area (it kind of suction cups right on there) and peeled off the protective film over the units 5 inch touch screen.

Turned on the unit, plugged in the charger, and VOILA all done! The screen resolution is amazing and my pink car is awesome!

Stay tuned for my upcoming post “Bringing the VIA around town” where I try out and explain more in detail all of the great features the VIA 1535 has to offer while traveling around the great NorthWest! And then my final post when I test this baby out going on our road trip to Wyoming…with 3 kids….12, 2 and 19 months…please pray for me. If you like what you see make sure you check out www.tomtom.com and TomTom on Facebook!
